Setting: DragonWings is set in the beginning of alternate 9th pass on the Southern Continent. AIVAS was never discovered, and changes that discovery would have brought never happened. There were no long intervals, no Southern Weyr, and none of the Weyrs ever disappeared.

Background: During the last Interval the Southern Continent was rediscovered, and a few Holds established. As the Pass was about to start Pern itself seemed to rebel against the approaching Red Star - severe weather, increased geological activity, disasters that plagued and strained the human kind. The Northern Weyrs, already overwrought from dealing with disasters and with depleted numbers after the Interval, declared no protection would be granted to the vast Southern lands. The Southern Holders were thus left to return north and abandon their homes. Only two groups of Holds were persistent enough to finally receive protection that consisted of two tiny, rapidly established Weyrs, composed of a few riders from each northern Weyr. One goldrider was sent to each Weyr, and after much strained negotiations a few more were arranged to transfer over time. The relationship between the North and South grew ever more strained as negotiations continued, helped along by hot tempers and stressful situations.

Finally ties between North and South were almost broken, except for the bare minimum and for the riders that were due to arrive in the future. To make matters worse for the South grubs were exterminated around the Holds as that was done earlier in the North, and the damage spread to wide areas before their value was discovered as Thread started to fall. The small Wings were strained to cover the entire affected area, but they had to at the cost of high casualties. Those sensing easy prey at the struggling Holds migrated south - piracy and theft abounded, and the Holds and Halls of the South could do little to guard against them. Trade became limited and few caravans were able to brave all the dangers. Pern's Southern Continent became infested with dangers that made life a constant struggle for survival, and few dare to brave all perils…
