Adoptable personas may already be out there in the Pern world as npc/free characters or may be awaiting you for their entrance. When adopting you may change the characters any way you wish, as long as the ranking npcs stay somewhat true to their previous state if they were extensively used. Of course, you can just replace them entirely as well.
