Appearance:

The dusky hued skin of a small and unimposing forehead slides into the darker, deep brown strands which trail unchecked down Vanalir's not too slender back.  Often untended, the beauteous locks normally twisted with pastel ribbons or summer flowers and grasses, depending on the season.  The scent of snow or spring is a common scent upon her, as Vana adores the world beyond the Hold's bounds, and visits the wilderness regularly.

Orbs of dark, deep ocean blue are locked over a well crafted nose that is neither too large nor too small.  Lips of a pretty scarlet often smile, or purse to a thoughtful, contemplative line.  Yet one's gaze always return to the gleaming spheres of passionate, dramatic sapphire.  Wide, but not fishlike, they resemble twin pools of depthless sea, the kind of waters even dolphins are daunted to swim.  Often welcoming and friendly, the natural hue and chill of Vanalir's eyes are softened by the woman's personality, which is more often tranquil and cheerful than powerful and commanding.

Bulky and plump would be the wrong words to describe the young woman, as she seems to be neither too muscular nor obese.  Rather, the blossoming youth is a good mixture of both, combining strength and the weight of good health into an appealing blend.  A distant dreamer, Vana's hair and clothing is usually somewhat unkept unless someone reminds her to tend to her looks.  Yet, the somewhat untidy look suits the woman's build and features, which are smooth and fanciful, almost exotically dragon-like at first glance.

Clothing matters little to Vanalir for she looks good in nearly anything from boy's breeches and tunics to delicate and expensive skirts and dresses.  Usually, the young woman wears simple attire, letting her mood of the day decide what she wears.  Often, this will result in interesting combinations, all of which Vana manages to look perfectly normal and even attractively original in.  But the weaver does know what colors and styles most accent her features.  She seems to therefore prefer loose, somewhat dressy breeches and comfortable and somewhat sensuous tunics.  Both shirt and pants are worn in hues of cerulean, which are too deep to be mistaken for harper blue.

Personality:

Vanalir is a dreamer, head-in-the-clouds, romanticist with a terrible knack for forgetting the tasks she should be doing.  In most people, this would be considered a negative trait, but it is only one of many aspects of Vanalir's personality, and is one of few faults. While usually fleeting and forgetful, the young woman can be quite responsible and remember things when she puts her mind to it

When she _does_ recollect what she's supposed to be doing, Vana works to her utmost ability, which is high in quality, especially when it comes to weaving.  Her creative nature gives the apprentice a talent for developing original ways to approach the creation of cloth.much to the chagrin of her peers.  Vanalir has often found herself the subject of rude jokes and cruel rumors for using self created techniques.  While the young weaver's procedures produce original designs, her teachers show little acceptance for creations which waste materials normally used for simpler patterns.

Another of the young woman's passions is the caring of children.  She loves youngsters, and will often shirk weaver duties to tend to a crying infant or help a distressed child.  Only Vana's skills of working under pressure keep the youth from being expelled from the Craft.  Much to her despair, she has no younger siblings to care for, and cannot herself seem to bare younglings of her own.  In defiance of what Nature has bestowed upon her ( or rather, _not_ given her) Vanalir seeks out fosters and orphans.  Not yet allowed to officially take them in as her own, she nevertheless cares for them as if she can, spending time with them when she should be attending to her weaver studies.

A much hidden side of Vanalir's normally gentle personality, the young woman can match a dragon queen protecting her clutch when she thinks those children she cares for might be in danger.  She has been known to face angered and dangerously abusive parents without thought for her own safety.  Vana has seen that they receive justice, and that the affected children are well placed with new families.

At those moments when others lives', especially younglings', are in jeopardy, Vana's mind is as clear and sharp as an arrow point.  Also, due to her impotency, the weaver often seeks men more than is normally acceptable for Hold women, always hoping that one might have the seed that will grant her children of her own.  This has placed her in a somewhat doubtful position with the other women of the Hold.  While they trust her with their children, they certainly don't want her stealing all the potential partners!

History:

Vanalir was the result of an interesting pairing between a northern Hold cook and bronzerider.  Meeting at a Gather, both V'lan and Nari found one another the perfect match, and met secretly for many Turns before finally becoming handfasted.  Disaster struck not long after they were joined.  The very day Nari found herself pregnant with their first child, V'lan was caught in an argument he could not brush off.  Both he, and his attacker, a wrathful minor holder who hadn't liked V'lan's past attentions towards his daughter, were killed in the knife fight that followed.

Torn with grief and sadness, Nari transferred to the South, taking an open position as a cook in Thetis Hold.  The work made her forget her loss, and eventually allowed the woman to care for her child as the remaining link to her lost bronzerider.  Perhaps too gentle and kind was Nari to her daughter, for Vanalir, appropriately named after both parents, soon grew spoiled and selfish as a youngster.  Learning of the behavior from friends whose children played with Vana, the cook quickly moved to catch the poor conduct.

Luckily for mother and child both, Vanalir learned quickly the difference between what was "right" and what was "wrong."  However, while she comprehended the ways she was supposed to act and supposed to think, some bits of her old way of thought still remained.  Creativity, independence, and a dreamer's mind remained to Vanalir.  And, while those attributes were assets, they often contradicted what her mother and future teachers would accept.

With the founding of Aedalu in T 190, Nari took an open job as assistant cook, also giving her daughter a new chance at things, which the youth took up eagerly.  Unfortunately, the traits she retained after her youthful bout of bad behavior made finding the ideal place for her extremely difficult.  Charming and good at heart, the initial problems with finding her a compatible craft daunted Vana, making her somewhat bitter towards the others living at Aedalu.  Eventually, these feelings would lead to further frustration and mild rebellion.

Nari enrolled her daughter in the Weavercraft only because all her other options had been exhausted.  The Head Cook couldn't stand Vanalir's experimentation in creating "new foods".  The Hold harper was initially impressed by the girl's creativity, but quickly learned Vanalir didn't have the patience to practice harp and voice scales.  She would often drift off into dream-like stupors as the musician described the various techniques of playing a flute.  The resident beastcrafter would have been impressed with Vana's tendency to talk to the animals, had she not made fun of him while speaking to the creatures.  Eventually, only the Weavercraft was left.  Only the demands and strict orders of the weavercrafter himself, and a will directly proportional to Vanalir's own, kept the exuberant youth in line for Turns longer than the other crafts.

These days the title of Apprentice Weaver is truly just a joke to Vanalir and most of the Hold.  She does very little in her "craft", except what is demanded to keep her in the guild, and has never bothered to travel to the Crafthall in the North to get promotion or further training.  Rather than being the result of a natural irresponsibility, Vana's lack of enthusiasm in weaving stems from a frustration of the conformist minds of her tutors and the people of the Hold.  Angered by the short sight of her fellow holders, Vanalir often "strikes out" by shirking her duties.  Likely, this intentional forgetfulness will dissolve with maturity.

Most of the young woman's free time is now spent tending the Hold's children, and seeking out mates.the former of which is greatly encouraged at Aedalu, the latter of which gains her great disapproval.  Nari, while somewhat disappointed in her daughter's progress, has hopes for the next Search.  Both she, and the Hold, hope the spunky youth will be Searched.though for very contrasting reasons.

Vanalir herself has few plans for the rest of her life.  She would like to be of use to someone, but cannot stand the confinement of the Hold, which cramps her liberal and independent mind.  Often, the young woman contemplates running away with the next Trader caravan, or jumping aback the next dragon to visit the Hold.whether she is invited or not.
