Zakat Territory History:

With the rediscovery of the Southern Continent a decade or so before the beginning of Ninth Pass people surged to the vast, rich, and open territories to stake their claim. Many so called Holds failed quickly when the hardships of the South caught up with them, but many more were strong enough to come through and thrive. The first of these was Thetis Hold, who made use of the rich land and resources, and quickly grew in size to rival Holds of the North. Zakat Island Hold followed, building a large sea port and providing a vital link to the North. It was on a large island far off the coast and occupied the western part up to the mountains and volcanoes that separated the eastern part. Soon people moved into the deep South (what is now the Icundsa Territory), and established Holds and Halls there.

Two turns or so before the Pass's beginning things began to look grim, as the Red Star's approach brought geological and atmospheric turbulence, and the Weyrs' stretched resources and disheveled state were realized. Finally, the messages came that no protection would be given to the South, and for all the Holders to move back north. The Weyrs were incapable of protecting the South's vast territories when they were already stretched to deal just with the North. This brought outrage, but after much debate only two groups succeeded in receiving a small degree of protection. Icundsa Weyr was founded two turns before the beginning of the Pass, while the resources to found Zakat Weyr were only found less than a turn before Thread descended.

Goldrider Syrallin and Bronzerider R'ven assumed leadership as a suitable location was found on Zakat Island, on the eastern tip in a large, extinct volcano. Preparations of the new Weyr were soon finished, and 45 riders moved into their new home. A few more were arranged to transfer in gradually, but even though the Weyrleaders knew they were going to be tested to the maximum.

As the Pass began Zakat's Wings rose to meet it, but will they even make it through the first turn?

Zakat Weyr is located in a huge, extinct volcano on the eastern tip of Zakat Island. The cauldron is huge, with a large system of tunnels that can house ten times the amount of people than there are currently residing. The tunnels, though in places expanded and evened out by man, are naturally uneven and hardly ever go in a straight line. The weyrs vary in size and many are irregularly shaped, though there are many natural, cool and warm springs running through the Weyr that feed many private and public bathing pools. In places there are as many as 10 habitable levels, with the lower two filled with storerooms, Dining Caverns, Infirmary, Goldriders' complex, Meeting Rooms, and the Hatching Grounds.

There are a few waterfalls in the Weyr's southern side, which feed the Weyr lake. In the east side there is a large, archway that forms the ground entrance to the Weyr through a tunnel that is a few dragonlengths' long. Also along that side there are some outside buildings such as the stables, the kennels, the dragons' feeding grounds, and the beastcraft complex. The Dining Caverns are in the north side, while a huge opening that leads into the rock face in the west and forms a covered semi-circular chamber forms the Hatching Grounds. The goldriders' and Weyrleaders' complexes are between the two.

Outside the Weyr there are lush tropical forests and a stretch of golden beach. A small port is located outside the Weyr's ground entrance, and the coast to either side is full of pleasant coves. Further to the west, dividing the island into two halves, stretches a chain of tall mountains and volcanos which few travel through. Many valleys and cliffs are hidden in their maze, and it's a treacherous land with temperate forests on the higher slopes, as well as occasional snow on the peaks. Zakat Island Hold lies on the other side of the mountain chain, in a pleasant country of plains and hills.

Zakat's Badge is of a black dragon over a red diamond, both outlined in yellow on a black field. The Weyr's colors are red, black, and yellow. Some riders have badges with their dragon's color replacing the black of the dragon.
