The beginning of the current Pass brought often-severe changes in weather and geological activity. Tropical area such as the Zakat Territory were the hardest hit, with volcanic activity, hurricanes, storms, earthquakes, extreme temperatures, and rapid weather swings. Weather over the Zakat Territory will vary in the three Fall sectors (see below) and the areas in-between. Zakat Island is often hardest hit by storms due to its exposed position in the sea. Its three active volcanoes are also far from dormant. Seaside Thetis Hold suffers from its share of hurricanes and storms, as well as other nasty weather. Starfall Hold and its territories are landlocked, thus safe from the less severe storms and tending to have overall gentler and slightly cooler weather. |
| Seasons |
Seasons on Pern's Southern Continent are similar to those in the southern hemisphere on Earth. Pern has 13 months to a Turn, each with 28 days of 25 hours each. Zakat Territory is in the tropics, so there is no great variation in weather and temperature between the seasons. The autumn and winter months bring a greater chance of unpleasant weather however, especially for hurricanes. |
